Severstal ramps up special duty steel capacity with degasser upgrade

Friday, 13 August 2021

Russian mining and steel company Severstal has completed the modernization of the vacuum degasser at its Cherepovets Iron and Steel Works, which has increased its production capacity by 500,000 mt/year.

To supply major equipment for the upgrade Severstal contracted Danieli in H2 2019. The Rb1.5 billion ($20.4 million) project enables the company to increase production of steel of grades and qualities suitable for the auto and pipe manufacturing industries.

The capacity of the degasser has risen to 2 million mt/year, up from 1.5 million mt/year previously.

Steel degassing is necessary for obtaining properties important in special duty steels, for instance, in bridge, shipbuilding and auto steel. Thanks to this reconstruction, the company expects to increase the output of high-margin degassed metal by up to 20%.

The Cherepovets mill makes steel coils, including coated sheet and plate, rebar, pipes and metalware.
